Marvel's Wonder Man Preview Unveils Marvel's Most Meta TV Show Ever
The Marvel studio has heard that viewers might be experiencing some superhero fatigue, so they've opted to include that very idea into their next superhero series.
That's right, the first preview for Wonder Man has been released, and it pledges a self-referential angle on the MCU.
The preview, which premiered on Oct. 10, also subtly moved the Wonder Man launch date later from its original end of 2025 window into early 2026.
Why another superhero film? People is tired of superhero content. Why go see them in the cinema? Wonder Man resonated with me on a deep level. There is an opportunity to shock audiences. To reimagine the entire genre of narrative.
The interviewer replies: "Have you given any thought about casting?"
The preview then transitions to lead actor Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, who's viewing the conversation on his phone, and the trailer ends.
What We Know About Wonder Man
We were previously aware that Wonder Man would be a meta take on the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The series features Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as the character Simon Williams, a Hollywood actor who transforms into a superhero (the hero Wonder Man).
The supporting cast includes Ben Kingsley returning as Iron Man 3's Trevor Slattery, Demetrius Grosse as Eric Williams (also known as Grim Reaper), Ed Harris as Simon's agent Neal Saroyan, and Arian Moayed returning as DODC officer P. Cleary.
Marvel's Meta-Humor Approach
We don't know much else about the storyline of Wonder Man, but it's evident that the studio plans to laugh at its own tropes.
In the aftermath of Deadpool & Wolverine, it seems like the production company is fully committed on meta-humor. Will that work without the celebrity appeal of its previous leads? Only time will tell.
