Golf England Calls for Government Funding for the year 2030 Solheim Cup Bid

The last European vs US women's golf contest held on European soil took place in Spain last year, while the upcoming tournament scheduled for Holland in 2026.

In the wake of the latest men's golf championship triumph, England Golf is urging UK authorities to support its bid to stage the Solheim Cup in the country for the very first occasion.

This prestigious contest between the leading female golfers from Europe and America has been held on two occasions in Scotland and in Wales but never on English territory. A bid has been put together to organize it at the Grove venue within Hertfordshire in 2030.

But organizers are seeking £30m to back this proposal and at present only £10m is in place. England Golf is urgently seeking public backing to underwrite the funding gap.

Discussions to acquire government support began earlier this year but a decision on whether it will be forthcoming is time-sensitive. The rights for the 2030 event are held by the International Management Group who want an answer within the current month.

Per the official documentation, the organizing committee maintains that securing the event "represents significant benefits to the nation".

"We are convinced at this moment it's appropriate that the Solheim Cup should take place in England," stated the CEO of England Golf.

He added: "England has developed so many players through the years and continue to do so, including top English players, national team members, or rising stars."

Regarding the returns for public funds, the spokesperson noted: "Recent events show the type of effect that premier competitions can generate regarding not just local economies."

He continued: "This is definitely what we anticipate will occur from a Solheim Cup perspective, from the expenditure that would happen throughout the tournament including job creation."

Financial Details

To stage the men's tournament on European soil requires over four hundred million pounds while for the Solheim Cup the requirement is about £30m.

"We require approximately twenty million pounds in public funding to underwrite it," the spokesperson declared.

"And that's to add to already a significant investment from The Grove and England Golf and potentially other partners that we'd look to invest."

Time Sensitivity

The representative refused to say that negotiations are at a standstill, but confirmed: "Certainly there exists a quandary presently regarding whether or not the Treasury can fund premier competitions."

"The government has proven, from major athletic events, or women's sports events, that they are ready to provide funding for certain events."

"In my opinion should we receive a positive answer within the next month, it would enable us to win the hosting rights to come to England."

He summarized: "There is no the financial backing currently; the hosting attempt cannot proceed. It could change tomorrow if I got the thumbs up, however the timeline is time-sensitive."
